November 1998 09:01 To: 'BMW320i/323i-Digest' Subject: Why are my wipers so slooooow? - Solution Hi Digesters, maybe this topic has already been discussed, but a lot of E21 drivers in cold areas have seen this problem. - In winter the wipers will move very slooooow. Problem: After some years the grease in the wiper motors gearbox tends to be stiff and act like some glue. In this case the motor need a lot of force to move the 2" gear and will slow down. Solution: - Remove the the motor (3 screws, 1 for the lever). - Open the gearbox by removing two 3mm screws and open the 4 rivets by drilling them up with an 8mm drill. - drill the 3 holes beside the rivets with 2.5mm (there is already a hole, but not deap enough. - drill 3 3mm threads in the new holes - wash and clean the gearbox with some and grease removing fluids. - lubricate the gearbox with grease (you can mix it with oil to make it thinner) - use less grease as it was from factory!!! - reassamble the covers for the gearbox - reinstall the wiper motor All this takes 1 hour with the result that the wipers speed up to "like new" specifications.
